Although minor improvements since the 1999 elections were identified, the Mission concludes that the elections did fall significantly short of OSCE commitments and other international standards for democratic elections.

More than US$750,000 in surgical instruments, antibiotics and other medicines left Seattle?s Boeing Field this Thursday, 16 December, for Tashkent, the capital of this former Soviet Republic. The medical goods traveled on a new Boeing 767 jet and arrived in Tashkent on 17 December.

Presidential elections in Uzbekistan are to be declared invalid if fewer than 33% of voters participate in the election process, according to the Law on introduction of amendments and addenda to certain legislative acts of Uzbekistan dated 3 December 2004. Earlier this number was not to be lower than 50%.
