NEW PHASE OF COOPERATION
On the eve of Forty-third Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov met with ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda in Oqsaroy, April 30.
Welcoming the guest, the head of state pointed out that ADB is duly regarded as one of the most authoritative and influential international financial institutions to have had a long-standing and reliable partnership with our republic. The Bank\'s steadily applied strategy of cooperation with Uzbekistan backs this statement.
“Mr. Kuroda, let me first express a sense of highest respect for You and, welcoming You in Tashkent, thankfulness for Your choice of Tashkent as the venue for the upcoming meeting of Asian Development Bank, – President Karimov said. – Holding an international forum of such a level in this city is a great honor for our country and, at the same time, an event of historic significance. Latest meetings of Governors of Asian Development Bank approved four major investment projects worth over 1.14 billion US dollars. As you know, these projects cover such important areas of our development as improvement of transport and communication infrastructure, provision of drinking water, development of public utilities, construction of combined cycle unit at Talimarjan thermal power plant, as well as support for small and medium businesses through commercial banks of the republic”.
Our republic, assisted by the Asian Development Bank, has been implementing major projects in priority sectors of the economy with a purpose to facilitate the development of strategically important and vital spheres. Effective realization of these projects, worked out in cooperation with ADB specialists, has been possible thanks to the legislation established in our country in the area of reforms and economic liberalization as well as the encouraging investment climate.
43rd Annual Meeting of ADB starts these days in Tashkent to become the first forum of such level in the region of Central Asia and to confirm the international community’s recognition of the effectiveness of Uzbek model of economic development. In addition, a meeting of finance ministers of ASEAN+3 is scheduled for May 2-4, during which the participants plan to discuss the progress of ADB\'s “Strategy-2020”, issues of reforming the global financial architecture, regional cooperation and post-crisis development of Asian countries, environmental protection and climate change.
As leading experts and specialists from respectable international financial institutions, including Asian Development Bank, acknowledge, Uzbekistan’s current level of economic development is a model of steady progression of basic indicators and sustainable dynamics of its growth amid global recession.
As Haruhiko Kuroda emphasized in particular, Uzbekistan has become one of the few countries in the world to have secured reliable and sustainable rates of economic and social development. According to him, the principle of Uzbek economy’s success has lied also in the fact that the leadership of the Republic of Uzbekistan did not rely exclusively on external loans, but took measures for audacious diversification of economy and rational management of the rich mineral, industrial, agricultural resources, and crucially, the powerful and highly intelligent human potential in contemporary conditions.
President of ADB Haruhiko Kuroda expressed his sincere gratitude to the head of our nation for the warm welcome, noting in particular that ADB is highly interested in further expanding and developing its partner relations with Uzbekistan in various sectors of economy and social development.
