Chemists of Uzbekistan implement environmental projects
Uzbekistan’s enterprises producing chemical goods are switching to environmentally friendly technologies of the XXI century.
This was announced at a press conference in Tashkent organized by the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Nature Protection and the State Joint Stock Company Uzkimyosanoat. The company’s representatives, environmentalists and heads of environmental protection divisions of major chemical manufacturers of the leading industrial centers of the country – Chirchiq, Olmaliq, Tashkent and Farghona provided in-depth information about their activities.
The company’s plants produce nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers, chlorine and received on the basis of its products, caustic soda and soda, plant protection chemicals and consumer goods of plastic, lead recycling of obsolete products. Current products are widely used in agriculture, chemical, metallurgy, gold mining, textiles, light industry and food industry of the country and also exported abroad.
A technical re-equipment of the industry envisages introduction of efficient resource-and energy-efficient clean technologies. In the process of replacing last century’s dirty technologies to clean ones, scientific-research and design institutes from different industries are very active.
At the industry’s leading enterprise - Maxam-Chirchik, the total cost of modernization of the equipment for production of ammonia and improving production technologies have already exceeded US$20m. In result, there are reduction in water consumption, improvement in efficiency of its purification and reduction of almost a quarter of the amount of emissions of air pollutants. This could substantially reduce the impact of industrial activity on the environment.
Such impact was reduced by the rest of enterprises of the joint stock company. A project on the clean development mechanism was successfully implemented with international support in the enterprises. The result was the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere affecting the ozone layer nitrous oxide. The result reached over the past three years, is equivalent to capture 3.6 million tons of carbon dioxide.
The improvement of production stimulates the legislation adopted in Uzbekistan. Enterprises pay compensation for pollution and waste disposal in the republic. Economic lever, as shown, has been an important stimulus of respect for nature. Better implementation of water legislation promotes the adoption of this year the republic’s Government regulations on the procedure for the issuance and use of water for these purposes permits. The documents provide a more effective compliance with the requirements of the water legislation, management and reliable protection of the most important natural resources, improve the responsibility of water users and water consumers.
At the press conference it was noted that the work undertaken in the country to raise environmental awareness. One specific example of work in this area was a publication of a children’s book “Chemical universe. Do good from bad.” It is told in a simple form of chemistry, environmental protection and ecological safety. The book is published under the project of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Nature Protection and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) - “Development of an Integrated National Program for the Sound Management of Chemicals in the Republic of Uzbekistan.”
