Delegation of the US Congress visited Uzbekistan
A delegation of US Congress led by Dana Rohrabacher, Chairman of Subcommittee for Europe and Eurasia of the House of Representatives and included congressmen Paul Cook, Ted Poe and Brian Higgins, visited Uzbekistan February 19-20, 2013 within the framework of regular contacts between legislators of the two nations. During the visit the delegation held several high-level bilateral meetings and negotiations.
President Islam Karimov met American lawmakers at the Oqsaroy on February 19, 2013.
The congressmen expressed gratitude to the President of Uzbekistan for a warm welcome and the opportunity to discuss major bilateral and international issues in constructive manner.
They noted that the United States highly appreciates Uzbekistan’s assistance in the socio-economic reconstruction of Afghanistan and the establishment of peace and stability in that country.
The delegation of the US Congress also met with the chairperson of Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Ilgizar Sobirov and the speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Dilorom Tashmuhamedova. The sides exchanged views on issues of further expansion and strengthening of inter-parliamentary cooperation.
During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan the sides discussed current state and perspectives of further expansion of bilateral relations.
A State program “The Year of Well-being and Prosperity” adopted
The program determines main direction of social-economic, spiritual and political development of Uzbekistan in 2013 and concretizes mechanisms, ensuring improvement of population prosperity, social stability, peace and well-being in each family and society.
It is expected that 6.655 trillion soums or $919.2 million will be directed to implementation of the program. State Budget of Uzbekistan will issue 3.312 trillion soums, executors and sponsors – 1.918 trillion soums, loans of commercial banks – 1.425 trillion soums. It is planned to attract $664.6 million of resources of international organizations, financial institutions.
The key direction of the program is increasing well-being and real income of population, raising employment rates, further development of healthcare, small and private businesses, farms, improve state targeted welfare of population. It is planned that salaries of works of the budget organizations, pensions, stipends and allowances will grow at least 23% in 2013. About 60% of all expenses of state budget will be directed to further development of social sector and social support of population.
Cargo transportation in 2012
About 1.344 billion tons of cargo was carried by all types of transport in Uzbekistan in January-December 2012, which grew by 5.4% year-on-year, the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan said.
The freight turnover was 84.8 billion tons-km and has exceeded the level of January- December 2011 by 5.2%, the committee said.
Some 1.216 billion tons of freights were carried by motor transport, which is 5.2% more than in January-December 2011. The freight turnover has increased by 6.1% to 27.7 billion tons-km.
The freight turnover of motor transport of individual entrepreneurs has exceeded the level of January-December 2011 by 8.4% and reached 20.8 billion tons-km. The share of private carriers in total freight turnover of motor transport was 75.1% against 73.6% in January- December 2011.
About 24,000 tons of freights were carried by air transport in 2012, which is 21.9% lower than in January- December 2011. The freight turnover has decreased by 24.2% to 123.2 million tons-km.
Uzbekistan increased pipeline transportation by 10% year-on-year in 2012 to 65.9 million tons, the committee said. The freight turnover through pipelines grew by 13.4% year-on-year and made up 34.1 billion tons-km.
AGMK to launch production of copper pipes at Angren industrial zone
Almalyk Mining and Metallurgy Combine (AGMK) started implementation of a project on organization of production of copper pipes of various diameters at the special industrial zone Angren, the press service of the company said.
The press service of AGMK said that the project was included to investment program of Uzbekistan for 2013.
The project is aimed at creating local production of copper pipes, complex use of raw materials, increase products, manufactured from copper, satisfy demand of population in copper pipes in internal market and export them.
The company said that Dubai Construction Company will build the plant. Chinese firm supplies equipment for the plant.
The plant will produce 8,000 tons of copper pipes of various diameters. It is expected that 7,600 tons of copper pipes will be exported. The plant will create 168 new jobs.
The project cost is 19.508 billion soums. It will be financed due to own resources of AGMK and loans of commercial banks. The plant will be launched by the end of 2013.
FIFA Approved Bunyodkor Statium for World Championship 2014
Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) officially approved football stadium “Bunyodkor” in Tashkent as a place of holding match of 4th qualified round of the world championship 2014 between the teams of Uzbekistan and Lebanon, press-service of Football Federation of Uzbekistan reported.
On February 4, 2013, “Bunyodkor” stadium was inspected by Asian Football Confederation competitions department.
Match between Uzbekistan and Lebanon will be held on March 26. Singaporean group of referees lead by Abdumalik Abdulbashir will judge the game.
From 18 to 20 of February Ambassador Ilhom Nematov visited San-Diego, the cities of Long Beach and Los Angels, CA to discuss partnership opportunities of Uzbekistan with state officials, business and education communities with the kind support extended by the American-Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce.
Ambassador Nematov met with the US Congressman from California Mr.Lowenthal, Mayor of San Diego Mr. Filner, Mayor of the city of Long-Beach Mr. Foster and chancellor of the Irvine University Mr. Drake, Senior Vice President of the University of San Diego Mr. O\'Malley, Vice Provost of the University of Southern California Mr. Bailey.
Uzbekistan’s economic, investment and tourism potential was presented to the wider audiences in the Office of the Mayor of San-Diego, Long Beach\'s Harbor Department and the Los Angeles area chamber of commerce.
