OSCE CHAIRMAN, UZBEK PRESIDENT DISCUSS ORGANISATION\'S ROLE IN CENTRAL ASIA
The OSCE\'s role in ensuring stability and security in Central Asia was one of the main topics discussed by the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, in talks with Uzbekistan\'s President Islam Karimov on Thursday.
President Karimov was in Ljubljana on an official visit at the invitation of Slovenian President Janez Drnovsek.
The OSCE Chairman informed the Uzbek leader about his recent address to the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, in which he stressed the importance of respect for human rights and outlined OSCE projects on the human dimension.
\"I warmly welcome the fact that President Karimov opposes implementation of the death penalty and I hope we will see further steps towards its abolition in Uzbekistan,\" he said.
President Karimov expressed support for Slovenia\'s efforts to reform the OSCE.
The Chairman-in-Office briefed President Karimov on Wednesday\'s EU-OSCE Troika meeting in Brussels, especially on the EU\'s new-neighborhood policy. The two men also discussed co-operation among regional organizations.
